The name Shannon has always been a major force in the West of Ireland and is synonymous with the triumph of innovation over adversity. Many of the economic development concepts and initiatives developed first at Shannon were subsequently applied on a national scale within Ireland, in a wider European context, and worldwide. The world's first duty free shop was established at Shannon Airport in 1947 and the Shannon Free Zone founded in 1959 was the world's first industrial free zone.
